Waitangi Day

Last Saturday Feb 6 was a little-known holiday called Waitangi Day which means nothing to me, but is the anniversary of the signing of New Zealand’s founding document. It’s not really comparable to 4th of July because (1) kiwis don’t really need an excuse to run around wildly and drink beer all day (2) the treaty made NZ part of the British Empire rather than declaring independence from the dirty red coats. I’ve got some good kiwi buddies out here so we had a little gathering involving a big slab of beef, few drinks and what led to some violent horseplay.
